Lynn Burkhead of Denison, Texas became Web Site Editor of Grand View Media Group’s outdoor web sites in January. Burkhead will be responsible for developing web site content for Cabela’s Outdoor Journal, Mossy Oak Hunting the Country, Southern Sporting Journal, Predator Xtreme, Hunt Club Digest, Blackpowder Guns & Hunting, Whitetail Journal and Waterfowl & Retriever. Before joining Grand View Media Group, Burkhead was an associate editor for the ESPNOutdoors.com web site.
A 1990 graduate of the University of North Texas with a degree in communications and public address, Burkhead has a variety of news, sports, and outdoor-related communication experience.
“We’re fortunate to have Lynn join our media team,” said Colin Moore, editorial director of Grand View Media Group. “He’s going to bring a lot of excitement to our web sites and make them magnets for outdoor enthusiasts. Lynn already has added video streams on new products and interviews with industry leaders, so he’s hit the ground running. Lynn has some fresh and unique ideas regarding editorial content for our web sites, and he’s implementing them as soon as possible. We’re committed to making our Outdoor Group web sites the best hunting and fishing web sites, and Lynn is the right person to help us get there.”
Burkhead’s communication career began in the late 1980s when he began sports broadcasting as a play-by-play voice, color commentator, and side-line reporter for various high school and collegiate athletic programs in the North Texas region. Currently, he serves as the play-by-play voice for the Denison High School football team on KMKT-FM. In 1990, Burkhead added another facet to his communication skills, taking a freelance outdoor writing position with the Gainesville Daily Register newspaper. A year later, he moved to the Sherman Democrat as a freelance outdoor writer, a position he retained for several years. When the Democrat merged with the Denison Herald to form the Herald Democrat, Lynn continued his weekly outdoor writing for the new newspaper.
In late 1999, Burkhead accepted a position as the News and Sports Director for KLAK-FM and KMKT-FM, sister radio stations in the Sherman/Denison area. While in this capacity, he performed 14 daily newscasts and two sportscasts. In 2000, Burkhead was honored by the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters with the organization’s “Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting Award” for a non-metro radio newscast. He became an associate editor for ESPNOutdoors.com Web site in 2001 and covered the ESPN Outdoors television show beat. While at EO.com, he also wrote about breaking outdoor news; first scoop stories about a number of world and state record book-caliber big game animals and fish; where-to and how-to feature stories; and columns.
While at ESPNOutdoors.com, Burkhead expanded his freelance outdoor writing career, becoming a nationally recognized writer and photographer whose byline and photo credits have appeared in a variety of regional, state, and national publications. Other communication experiences on Burkhead’s resume include coverage of the ATA and SHOT Show outdoor trade shows; formerly serving on the board of directors for the Western Outdoors Writers group; speaking as a media representative at a 2003 U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service conference in Washington, D.C.; and covering a variety of sporting events and outdoor competitions including Super Bowl XXX, the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals, NASCAR races, the 2001 CITGO Bassmaster Classic, and the 2001 Professional Walleye Trail Championship.
On the home front in North Texas, Lynn is a dedicated husband to his wife of 14 years, Charissa, and is the father of a daughter and two sons. An active member in his local church, First Baptist of Denison, Burkhead enjoys bowhunting whitetails and western big game, duck hunting, fly fishing, digital photography, snow skiing, and spring turkey hunting in his spare time.
