Howlett To Edit Grand View Media Group’s Southern Sporting Journal
Doug Howlett has joined the editorial staff of Grand View Media Group’s Outdoor Division as editor in chief of Southern Sporting Journal and the company’s web site editor.
Howlett was most recently deputy editor of Outdoor Life magazine prior to accepting his new position with Grand View and previously served as editor of Turkey Call magazine and a staff writer and editor for American Hunter magazine.
“Doug Howlett is one of the best writers and magazine editors in the outdoor publishing field, and we’re excited to have him join our team,” said Colin Moore, editorial director of Grand View Media Group’s Outdoor Division. “Doug has improved every magazine that he’s ever worked for and the fact that he is a native Southerner makes him a natural fit for Southern Sporting Journal. Additionally, his extensive experience in online content development makes him uniquely qualified to develop new strategies that will help us attain our goals for print media and web sites.”
Howlett grew up in Virginia hunting whitetail deer, wild turkey and small game, as well as fishing in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. His writing career began as a reporter for a small newspaper that covered NASCAR’s Busch Grand National Racing Series before he moved on to a daily newspaper as a beat reporter in North Carolina. His first job as an editor and writer in the outdoor industry was with American Hunter magazine in 1994. In 1998, the National Wild Turkey Federation hired Howlett to edit its Turkey Call Magazine and coordinate development and management of the organization’s four we sites. At Outdoor Life, whose staff he joined in 2004, Howlett was primarily responsible for editorial coverage of outdoor equipment as well as writing features on a range of hunting and fishing topics. He also maintained a daily blog on the magazine’s web site.
His personal and professional passion for the outdoors has led Howlett to hunt and fish many North American species in 32 states as well as Canada and Mexico. Howlett’s award-winning writing has been read in dozens of outdoor magazines and web sites, and he has appeared on numerous outdoor radio and television programs including Benelli’s American Safari, Bushnell’s Secrets of the Hunt and Sportsman’s Outdoor Strategies.
Southern Sporting Journal is a regional magazine dedicated to hunting and fishing pursuits in the South, and covers the equipment and gear Southerners are likely to use during their time spent outdoors.
“Southern Sporting Journal is the voice of the Southern outdoors,” says Moore. “The South is huge when it comes to hunting and fishing. For example, there are more hunters and fishermen in the South than in any other region of the country. Thirty-seven percent of all the ATVs sold in the U.S. are sold in the South alone. Southern Sporting Journal and Doug Howlett are going to be at the heart of all that is happening and all that is important to sportsmen in this region.”
In addition to Southern Sporting Journal, Grand View Media Group publishes Archery Business, Black’s Directories, Blackpowder Guns & Hunting, Bowhunting World, Cabela’s Outfitter Journal, Hunt Club Digest, Predator Xtreme, Professional Bull Rider, Waterfowl & Retriever and Whitetail Journal.
