Flow Control Magazine Wins 2 Awards for Publication Excellence

July 6, 2006 — Flow Control magazine (www.flowcontrolnetwork.com), an industry trade journal covering fluid handling technology and systems design, won two awards in the 18th annual APEX (Awards for Publication Excellence, www.apexawards.com) competition — one in the Best Covers category and one in Best Redesigns category. APEX is a program designed to recognize excellence in publications work by professional communicators.

All told, there were more than 5,000 nominations for APEX 2006, and awards were issued in 11 major categories and 102 subcategories. Flow Control was honored in the Best Covers category for its July 2005 cover, “Bugging Out,” which featured the Marvel Comics character Ant-Man. Ant-Man, who rose to modest popularity in early 1960s-era Marvel Comics, was used to illustrate a cover story about a bacteria outbreak in a storage disc slurry filtration process. Flow Control was honored in the Best Redesigns category for a comparative analysis of its March 2006 issue versus its January 2005 issue.

“We are very proud to be among this year’s APEX winners, and it is particularly exciting to be selected from such a large number of nominees,” said Matt Migliore, editor of Flow Control magazine. “The win in the Best Covers category serves as validation for all of the hard work we put into developing interesting cover concepts, while the win in the Best Redesigns category gives us proof positive that we are improving as a publication. Special thanks should go to Bronwyne Carr Chapman, our art director, for all of the hard work she put in to help us redesign the magazine and make it more reader friendly.”

The APEX competition is based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry — in the opinion of the judges — in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence. APEX is organized by Communications Concepts, publishers of Writing that Works and Concepts, training publications for writing, editing, and managing business publications. The APEX 2006 panel of judges included John De Lellis, Concepts editor & publisher, Carolyn Mulford, Concepts senior evaluator for the Publication Evaluation Program and senior writer & editor of Writing That Works, Christine Turner, contributing editor of Writing That Works: The Business Communications Report, and Bill Londino, consulting editor of Writing That Works.
